Six academic professionals received 2011 Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence awards at a reception April 1 at the I Hotel and Conference Center.

Six academic professionals will receive 2010 Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence awards at a reception April 1 at the I Hotel and Conference Center. Academic professionals perform a wide range of critical functions for the campus community and beyond. They provide critical administrative support, support research laboratories and educational programs, and offer important outreach programs throughout the state. Now in its 22nd year, the awards are intended to honor the accomplishments and contributions of individuals in this employment category.

Sixteen civil service employees – eight this year and eight in 2020 – at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign were recognized for exceptional performance with the Chancellor’s Distinguished Staff Award.

The Campus Honors Program admits up to 125 freshmen each year and up to 20 additional students join the program at the beginning of their sophomore year.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Ninety University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students have received School of Chemical Sciences Undergraduate Awards for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Chemistry professor Mei Shen is among 126 early-career researchers receiving the 2023 Sloan Research Fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. According to the foundation, the awards “honor extraordinary U.S. and Canadian researchers whose creativity, innovation and research accomplishments make them stand out as the next generation of leaders.” Awardees receive a two-year $75,000 fellowship to advance their research.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign chemistry professor Nancy Makri has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest professional honors a scientist can receive. She is among 120 members and 23 international members elected this year to recognize their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

Civic Commitment Research and Teaching Grants announced The first set of innovative Civic Commitment Research and Teaching Grants was awarded this year. In January 2006, Chancellor Richard Herman charged his newly created Task Force on Civic Commitment in the 21st Century with "creating a sharpened and sustained curricular and co-curricular emphasis on advancing the public good." The initiative aims to enrich research and teaching in ways that help explore how we as a university will help students and society meet the challenges of modern citizenship. Last fall, the task force issued a call for proposals from faculty members and administrators to address this ambitious campuswide goal. "The response to our request for proposals was extraordinary," said Jim Wescoat, professor and chair of the department of landscape architecture, who also serves as chair of the task force. "We received approximately 70 proposals from a wide array of academic and administrative units. The RFP process helped task force members appreciate the depth of commitment to civic engagement that already exists on our campus." Proposal topics range from a speaker series featuring global scholars who have put their lives at risk to lead their communities to a local K-12 program to help elementary students learn reading skills through science. College of Engineering faculty members Paul V. Braun, Huimin Zhao, Jianming Jin, Rizwan Uddin and Jessica Krogstad were all recently honored, and a former nuclear reactor on campus became an America Nuclear Society Nuclear Historic Landmark.

Brendan Harley, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has been selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s 22nd annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. Each year the academy invites engineers ages 30 to 45 who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines to attend the event.

Jennifer T. Bernhard, the associate dean for research in the College of Engineering, has been elected to the Engineering Research Council Executive Board of Directors for 2016-19. As part of the American Society of Engineering Education, the Engineering Research Council is composed of representatives from engineering colleges, industry and government as a forum for discussion of problems and exchange of information pertaining to the research activities of ASEE members.

Mani Golparvar-Fard, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, won the 2016 Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Golparvar-Fard was cited for his “cutting-edge research focused on creating new knowledge in computer vision sensing and analytics to formalize simple yet effective project monitoring and control techniques for construction teams, as well as for his active engagement teaching philosophy.”

Dipanjan Pan, a professor of bioengineering, has been named a Fellow of the American Heart Association in the organization’s Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences.

Paul Fischer, a professor of computer science and of mechanical science and engineering, and research colleague Misun Min at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory recently earned an R&D 100 Award, which recognizes top technologies of the year. Known as the “Oscars of Invention,” the awards are organized by R&D Magazine.

Aerospace engineering professor John Lambros and his Ph.D. student, Owen Kingstedt, were recognized with the 2017 Society of Experimental Mechanics M. Hetényi Award. An aerospace engineering faculty member since 2000, Lambros has simultaneously garnered SEM’s 2017 P.S. Theocaris Award, which recognizes a senior individual for distinguished, innovative and outstanding work in optical methods and experimental mechanics.
