CHAMPAIGN, Ill. A buzz being heard around the entomology department these days is a genomic celebration. Three departmental researchers will have key roles in a recently announced federal project to map the some 15,000 genes of a honeybee (Apis mellifera).

Wolynes - are among 283 scientists who will be recognized Feb. 19 (Saturday) as new fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science during the association's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - In May 1961, a group of six blacks and seven whites boarded buses in Washington, D.C., for the original Freedom Ride, designed to test the legality of "separate but equal" facilities in interstate public travel in the South. The riders would never reach New Orleans, their intended destination, as they would be stopped along the way by angry mobs, severe beatings and the firebombing of one bus.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Three new exhibitions will open on a staggered schedule throughout January at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Krannert Art Museum. All three will be on view through April 13.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Three University of Illinois students have each been awarded a Boren Scholarship and will be spending the 2014-2015 academic year studying a foreign language abroad.

University of Illinois students Daniel Cudzich, Max Fan and Aidan Lindsay were awarded Barry M. Goldwater scholarships for their potential to contribute to the advancement of research in the natural sciences, mathematics or engineering.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Gabrielle Capone, Leland Pan and Frankie Ward are recipients of the Voyager Scholarship, the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service.

Three University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign undergraduates are among 208 students nationwide awarded David L. Boren Scholarships. The National Security Education Program selects students to add international and language components to their education by studying overseas in world regions critical to U.S. interests.

Three faculty members at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been named to the 2020 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers list. The list recognizes leading researchers in the sciences and social sciences from around the world. It is based on an analysis of journal article publication and citation data, an objective measure of a researcher’s influence, from 2009-2019.

The highly cited Illinois researchers this year are: materials science and engineering professor Axel Hoffmann, crop sciences and plant biology professor Stephen Long, and plant biology professor Donald Ort.

Three University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign scientists have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Three researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign were among 56 young researchers named as recipients of the 2005 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on young professionals at the outset of their independent research careers.

Bobby Smith II, a professor of African American studies; Retika Adhikari Desai, a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow in Asian American Studies; and Juliet Larkin-Gilmore, a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow in American Indian Studies, are 2021 ACLS Fellows.

Three Illinois scientists are among 126 recipients of the 2018 Sloan Research Fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. According to the foundation, the awards “honor early career scholars whose achievements mark them as among the very best scientific minds working today.” Winners receive a two-year $65,000 fellowship to further their research.

Psychology professors J. Kathryn Bock and Gary S. Dell, and physics professor Taekjip Ha will join other new members in an induction ceremony in October in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

CHAMPAIGN, lll. - We swim in a sea of information, but filter out most of what we see or hear. A new analysis of data from dozens of studies sheds new light on how we choose what we do and do not hear. The study found that while people tend to avoid information that contradicts what they already think or believe, certain factors can cause them to seek out, or at least consider, other points of view.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Siebel Systems Inc. and the University of Illinois today announced that alumnus Thomas M. Siebel agreed to donate $32 million to the university to construct state-of-the-art facilities for the department of computer science at the Urbana campus.

Thomas Huang, a pioneering researcher in the field of image compression and an influential educator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, died Saturday. In his long career as a professor of electrical and computer engineering, Huang was ranked among the world’s most influential researchers and mentored more than 100 students. He was 83.

“Tracing You,” an online arts project by University of Illinois researcher Ben Grosser, tries to pinpoint the physical location of visitors to the website. Grosser said the project reveals a desire for surveillance.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Thirteen University of Illinois undergraduate students have been awarded scholarships from the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program. The scholarships are for students studying abroad in summer 2013, fall 2013 or the 2013-14 academic year.
