  • Project to reconnect Native American tribes with historic hide painting, artistic tradition

The “Reclaiming Stories” project aims to reconnect members of the Miami and Peoria tribes with their artistic tradition of hide painting and to center Indigenous knowledge in interpreting the practice. The project is a collaboration between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Myaamia Center at Miami University in Ohio, and members of the Miami and Peoria tribes.

One of the best examples of the tribes’ hide-painting tradition is an 18th-century ceremonial robe featuring an iconic image of a thunderbird, now in the collection of the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac in Paris.
