A new book by sociology professor Jose Atiles at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign examines Puerto Rico’s struggles under its colonial relationship with the U.S. Based on eight years of the author’s research, the book explores how the ongoing use of emergency powers circumvented democratic processes, promoting corruption and wealth extraction to the detriment of Puerto Rico’s citizens.
