  • New book highlights accomplishments of influential Black leader in post-Civil War Illinois

    John J. Bird was the first Black trustee for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, appointed in 1873, and an influential leader who advocated for the Black community in the late 19th century. Illinois emeritus professor of religion Wayne Pitard wrote a new book about Bird and his accomplishments.
