The University YMCA is seeking volunteers and donations for its 18th annual Dump & Run recycling program. Collections during the May period of Dump & Run will be held exclusively at the Stock Pavilion, 1402 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Urbana, because the MCORE construction project limits access to the University YMCA building on Wright Street.
The program is entirely dependent on volunteers and keeps more than 20 tons of unwanted goods out of Champaign-Urbana’s landfill each year. Proceeds of the Dump & Run Big Sale in August support the University Y’s programs. Volunteers work alongside YMCA staff in May to collect donated items from residence halls and the community.
Volunteers are needed starting Monday, May 6, through Wednesday, June 5, to help collect, sort and pack reusable items from the campus move-out and spring cleaning. Volunteer orientation will take place at the Stock Pavilion at the beginning of the volunteer’s shift. No heavy lifting is required. Sign up to volunteer online.
Campus and community members who would like to donate items for the sale in August may do so at the Stock Pavilion on Tuesday, May 7, and Wednesday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 15-17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The University YMCA also offers a free pickup day for furniture and bikes that people want to donate on Saturday, June 1, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Community members may request a furniture/bike pickup online.
Accepted items include furniture, dishes, glassware, pots and pans, small household appliances, computers, electronics, bicycles, office and school supplies, nearly new clothing, books, toiletries, lawn and garden items, artwork, musical instruments, sporting equipment and other household goods.
Dump & Run does not accept televisions, paint, child car seats, cribs, helmets, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, stoves, washers, dryers and other large appliances, nonworking electronics and computer parts, sleeper sofas, mattresses, foam mattress pads, large entertainment centers, Christmas or holiday decorations, badly ripped, stained or soiled furniture, or large exercise equipment. The University YMCA reserves the right to refuse any donation offered, based on but not limited to its size, weight and condition.
