CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Martin Camargo will become the interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences effective Nov. 1, pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.
Camargo is currently associate dean for humanities and interdisciplinary programs in LAS. He holds a tenured faculty appointment in English and courtesy appointments as a professor of classics and of medieval studies.
Executive Associate Dean Brian Ross has been LAS interim dean since early October, when interim chancellor Barb Wilson became executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs. On Oct. 31, Ross retired from the university.
Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Edward Feser said an internal search is underway for the position of permanent LAS dean. Feser said he hoped to have the new dean in place by the end of November.
With 660 tenure-system faculty, LAS accounts for one-third of all faculty on the Urbana campus. LAS offers 70 majors; more than 99 percent of students on the Urbana campus take a class in LAS.
