The Office of Volunteer Programs is sponsoring the eighth annual Cans Across the Quad food drive Sept. 29 in conjunction with National Hunger Action Month. Registered student organizations, campus units and people from the university and community are encouraged to participate.
Those who donate should bring cans of food to Anniversary Plaza, which is south of the Illini Union on the Quad. Cans that are dented, rusted or expired cannot be accepted. Donations will be accepted from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
This year’s collection goal is 1,000 meals, with each 1.2 pounds of food equaling one meal.
“The Office of Volunteer Programs is honored to continue Cans Across the Quad in conjunction with the Eastern Illinois Foodbank,” said John Race, OVP program adviser. “This is a cornerstone event for our department.”
The Eastern Illinois Foodbank will collect all donations at the end of the event and distribute the contributions to food shelters across the county.
Awards will be given out again this year. For every 20 meals donated, organizations will be entered in a raffle for a chance to win one of seven $50 prizes. These gift values will be an internal fund transfer to each RSO account of the seven winning organizations.
