CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Tony Waldrop has agreed to accept the position of vice chancellor for research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, pending approval of the board of trustees at its meeting Thursday (March 2) in Urbana.
Waldrop will succeed Richard Alkire, who returned to the faculty in August. Waldrop has been holding the position on an interim basis since fall. He would assume the permanent job on Friday.
"I believe that Tony has done a superb job as interim vice chancellor for research, within the office of the vice chancellor, throughout the rest of the campus and in external arenas," said Chancellor Michael Aiken.
"He has played a key role in the development of plans for the new research park and I am impressed with his excellent ideas on ways in which to increase the amount of federal and corporate research dollars coming to campus."
Waldrop received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and came to the UI in 1989. He is a professor in molecular and integrative physiology and has served in several administrative capacities since 1993.
Waldrop will continue to serve as interim dean of the Graduate College until a new dean is named. He also will hold the rank of professor of molecular and integrative physiology on indefinite tenure.
