CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois announced today that it is provisionally joining the Worker's Rights Consortium, an organization dedicated to putting an end to substandard labor conditions for workers who make collegiate apparel.
Twenty-eight schools, including Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, are affiliated with the WRC.
The UI's decision to join was based on a recommendation from the Licensing Advisory Committee. The committee is composed of two students, three faculty members and three administrators.
"The Licensing Advisory Committee concluded that the Worker's Rights Consortium offered a model that could be helpful in monitoring and improving working conditions at locations where Illinois merchandise is manufactured," said Associate Chancellor Judith Rowan, the chair of the committee.
By joining the WRC now, the UI will be able to take part in the consortium's initial meeting April 7 in New York City.
