CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Several University of Illinois students have been recognized for outstanding leadership during the 1999-2000 academic year.

The award winners were selected through a campuswide nomination process organized by the UI Office of Student Affairs and were honored at a campus awards luncheon. All awards include a monetary prize.
Student Affairs also presented leadership awards to six student organizations. Organizacion de Logopedia y Audiologia received the Joseph H. Smith Award, created to honor a former faculty member and administrator, and the T.I.S. Bookstore Outstanding Student Organization Awards were given to Floatin' Illini, Illini Dance Team, Interfraternity Council, Society of Women Engineers and Volunteer Illini Projects Inc.
Student Leadership Award Recipients
AURORA -- Antwan Williams, 1532 Golden Oaks Parkway, senior in the College of Engineering. Williams received the Jean F. Hill Award, established in honor of Hill, a former UI dean who was committed to students from underrepresented populations.
BUFFALO GROVE -- Jason Abel, 866 Thornton Lane, senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Abel received the Chicago Illini Club Excellence in Leadership Award, which is funded through an endowment by the club, a regional affiliate of the UI Alumni Association.
CAROL STREAM -- Amanda Keating, 493 Parkside Drive, graduate student in the School of Architecture and department of urban and regional planning. Keating received the Mothers Association Humanitarian Service Award, created to encourage and recognize student community service. A contribution also is made to the organization of the recipient's choice.
CICERO -- Benur Gonzalez, 5043 W. 24th St., senior in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Gonzalez received the Jean F. Hill Award, established in honor of Hill, a former UI dean of students who was committed to students from underrepresented populations.
FOX RIVER GROVE -- Kelly Speer, 1011 Lincoln Ave., senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Speer received the Aimee Olson Award, created in memory of Olson, a campus leader who died in a car accident in 1997.
JOLIET -- Amos Heath, 2301 S. Francis Ave., sophomore in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Heath received the Joshua L. Grafton Award, created as a memorial to Grafton, a student leader and member of the Class of 1983 who died in 1989.
LELAND -- Lynnette Boughton, 3832 Leland Road, senior in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Boughton received the Fred H. Turner Memorial Award, established in memory of the UI's first dean of students.
LIBERTYVILLE -- Roi Kawai, 746 Kenwood Ave., sophomore in the College of Commerce and Business Administration. Kawai received the Joshua Grafton Award, created as a memorial to Grafton, a student leader and member of the Class of 1983 who died in 1989
. MATTOON -- Anjali Aduki, 3000 Hillcrest, senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Aduki received the Procter & Gamble Excellence in Leadership Award, created to support leadership opportunities at the UI.
MONTICELLO -- Kara Benson, 811 S. Hamilton St., junior in the College of Education. Benson received the Barbara Seaquist Williams Award, established in honor of the former treasurer of the U.S. Tennis Association who was an active volunteer as a UI student in the late 1940s.
NAPERVILLE -- Lauren Sykora, 2264 Briarhill Drive, senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Sykora received the Vicki Lynn Merkel Excellence in Leadership Award, created in memory of Merkel, a student leader and member of the UI Class of 1987 who died during her senior year.
ORLAND PARK -- Kristen Piwowarski, 13338 Westgate Court, senior in the College of Applied Life Studies. Piwowarski received the Mothers Association Humanitarian Service Award, created to encourage and recognize student community service. A contribution also is made to the organization of the recipient's choice.
WESTMONT -- Brandt Molitor, 106 W. 64th Lake Drive, junior in the College of Education. Molitor received the Irene Pierson Award, created in 1966 in honor of the first female president of the UI Student Senate.
WILMETTE -- Cecilia Composto, 3404 W. Wilmette, junior in the College of Education; and Elizabeth Pickens, 620 Forest Ave., senior in the College of Commerce and Business Administration. Composto received the Barbara Seaquist Williams Award, established in honor of the former treasurer of the U.S. Tennis Association who was an active volunteer as a UI student in the late 1940s. Pickens received the Fred H. Turner Memorial Award, established in honor of the UI's first dean of students.
WOODRIDGE -- Saravan Rajendran, 6611 Maxwell Drive, senior in the College of Engineering. Rajendran received the Fred H. Turner Memorial Award, established in honor of the UI's first dean of students.

VIRGINIA, Herndon -- Amber Sloan, 13013 Henson Court, senior in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Sloan received the Frances Redmon Award, given in honor of the UI alumna and resident of Alexandria, Va., who has devoted her life to the arts and has served on numerous performing arts boards.
