CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is planning an in-person individual, private stage-crossing experience for 2020 and 2021 graduates May 10–17 at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
The stage crossing will be an individual procession specific to each graduate. Graduates may register for a time slot, during which they will proceed into the theatre where the graduate’s name will be announced as they cross a stage. Two guests will be allowed to accompany each graduate. Mandatory COVID-19 safety protocols will apply for all who participate, including wearing face coverings and practicing social distancing.
“We absolutely understand the importance of commencement at Illinois, and we are committed to doing everything we can to celebrate the success of Illinois graduates while working to maximize the health and safety of our community,” Chancellor Robert J. Jones said.
Professional photographers will take formal portraits and videographers will livestream and record the stage crossings. Graduates who cannot or choose not to attend the stage crossings are invited to participate in the online celebration and other celebratory virtual experiences for graduates.
Instructions on how to register for a time slot, guidelines about safety protocols and other information will be shared directly with graduates via email as they are finalized. More details also will be available on the commencement website.
