    University of Illinois English professor and author Nafissa Thompson-Spires writes with humor about the lives of contemporary black Americans and difficult issues of black citizenship in her collection of short stories “Heads of the Colored People.” The book – Thompson-Spires’ first – was on the longlist for the National Book Award.
