The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at the University of Illinois is offering a unique learning opportunity in the form of the Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program for spring 2016.
Commonly called IFLIP, the course will be held for three hours a day Monday through Friday, May 16-27. Classes are taught by advanced graduate students or faculty members at the U. of I.
Courses focus on conversational skills, travel preparation and language survival skills. There is minimal homework, no attendance policy and no academic credit. Each class must have a minimum of 10 participants.
Participants can place themselves based on the following guidelines:
- Elementary is for those with no prior experience or formal training in the language.
- Intermediate is for those with the equivalent of one year of college-level instruction in the language.
- Advanced is for those with the equivalent of two or more years of college-level instruction in the language.
Registration by May 1 is strongly encouraged. Registration fees will be refunded for classes canceled because of insufficient enrollment.
Except as noted below, classes will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Instruction will be offered in the following languages: elementary Arabic, elementary French, intermediate French (1-4 p.m.), advanced French, elementary German, Biblical Greek (1-4 p.m.), elementary Italian (1-4 p.m.), intermediate Italian, advanced Italian (1-4 p.m.), elementary Korean, elementary Latin (5-8 p.m.), elementary Portuguese, intermediate Portuguese (1-4 p.m.), elementary Russian, elementary Spanish, intermediate Spanish (1-4 p.m.) and advanced Spanish.
The cost for U. of I. students is $100; for U. of I. faculty and staff members and retirees, $125; and for the public, $150. Payments must be made at the time of registration.
Cancellations after May 1 will be assessed a $25 fee. There will be no refunds after May 16, the first day of class.
