Netherlands’ ambassador to the U.S. will deliver the keynote address for the 14th annual European Union Day at the U. of I. on Feb. 29, speaking on the state of the EU.
The address by the Dutch ambassador, Henne Schuwer, will be at 10 a.m. in the ballroom of the Alice Campbell Alumni Center, 601 S. Lincoln Ave., Urbana, and will be followed by a reception.
The event, organized by the European Union Center, is free and open to the public.
Among potential topics will be the EU’s challenges in dealing with a flood of refugees from the Middle East and recent negotiations to keep the United Kingdom from leaving the union, as well as security, energy and climate change concerns.
The Netherlands holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, which rotates on an every-six-months basis.
