John Caughlin, a professor of communication, has been named to the inaugural class of fellows of the International Association for Relationship Research. The honor recognizes Caughlin’s valuable contributions to research, teaching and mentoring in the field. The scientific organization includes scholars and practitioners who are focused on supporting the scientific study of personal and social relationships, according to the organization’s website.
Hans Hock, a professor emeritus of linguistics, was awarded the Professor Sukumar Sen Memorial Gold Medal for 2015 from the Asiatic Society in Kolkata, India. He was given the award in appreciation of his important contributions in general historical and comparative linguistics as well as Sanskrit.

B.K. Sharma, a senior research scientist at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, has been elected a fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers. Fellows are selected based on their significant impact on the field. Fellows represent outstanding authorities from industry, academia and government agencies. Six new fellows were named for 2016 and will be honored at the 71st Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers Annual Meeting and Exhibition May 17 in Las Vegas. Tribology is a multidisciplinary field concerned with design, friction, wear and lubrication of moving parts. It’s a branch of inquiry that spans mechanical engineering, materials science, surface science and others.
