Since 2008, the Education Justice Project, a unit of the College of Education, has offered for-credit courses and other programs to incarcerated men at the Danville Correctional Center, a men’s medium-security prison. The organizers believe providing quality higher education to incarcerated individuals is a matter of urgency and justice. Applications are accepted each fall and spring from serious-minded faculty and staff members, graduate students and community members who wish to teach in the program. Project instructors donate their time and expertise.
Applications are due March 1 for fall 2016 and, in the case of for-credit instructors only, also for spring 2017. The project seeks excellent teachers who are interested in teaching for-credit courses (between 1-4 credits), presenting workshops, working with English as a second language students, participating in the project’s prison-based anti-violence program, facilitating mindfulness groups and more. Applicants should have an interest in becoming part of a diverse, inclusive and supportive community.
