Antony Augoustakis, a professor of classics and of medieval studies, will receive an Award for Excellence in Teaching at the College Level at the 147th annual meeting of the Society for Classical Studies.
Augoustakis is one of three people who will receive the award.
His award citation praises him for his dedication to his students and his “willingness to go out of his way for them.” The citation continues: “Students praise Dr. Augoustakis as a demanding but inspirational teacher.” They also praise his “flexibility, his willingness to meet with students individually as often as they wish, and his efforts to tailor special assignments in the class to each student’s needs and interests.”
The Society for Classical Studies is composed of more than 3,000 individual members as well as more than 200 libraries and 50 classics departments.
McKINLEY HEALTH CENTER
Dr. Marshall L Garrick, the head psychiatrist and unit manager of McKinley Health Center’s Mental Health Clinic, has been recognized by the Illinois Psychiatric Society with its Innovation in Patient Care award. The award is for contributions to the improvement of clinical services through innovation in service type, setting, delivery model or quality measures. The award presentation will be Jan. 16 at the IPS annual meeting in Chicago.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS
L. Brian Stauffer, a photographer for the News Bureau, was honored by the University Photographers’ Association of America. His photo of students at the Diwali on the Quad festival Nov. 13 received first place in the news and college life category in the association’s monthly image competition for December. A second photo taken during the festival shows the lights of the traditional Hindu celebration with Foellinger Auditorium in the background (featured on the Inside Illinois home page Nov. 19) placed fourth in the campus environment category. The association is an international organization of college and university photographers concerned with the application and practice of photography as it relates to the higher education setting.
