Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, seeks to select two predoctoral fellows in biohumanities for the 2016–17 academic year. The application deadline is Jan. 15.
Biohumanities is an emerging field distinguished by its critical and creative appropriation of findings in the biological sciences for the purpose of reimagining and reconfiguring our sense of human being and of the meaning and significance of human undertakings.
The fellows will participate in all activities of the biohumanities research group, as led by the faculty fellow in biohumanities, Samantha Frost, a professor of political science and of gender and women’s studies. In addition to pursuing biohumanities-related research projects of their own, the fellows will participate in a seminar aimed at developing methodologies for biohumanities research.
Advanced Ph.D. students from all humanities disciplines – including the humanities-inflected social sciences – whose research and teaching interests lie in the area of biohumanities are encouraged to apply.
Fellows receive a $25,000 stipend, tuition and fee waiver and a $2,500 research fund. Only Urbana-campus Ph.D. students are eligible to apply. Applicants must be “ABD”– have completed all requirements for their doctoral studies except their dissertation – and should be ready to work on their dissertation projects during the fellowship year.
Applications must be submitted online. Questions may be sent to Nancy Castro, IPRH associate director, at ncastro@illinois.edu or 217-244-7913.
