The Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment will host an array of events during Sustainability Week, Oct. 19-23:
- Campus Tree Walk: Noon-1 p.m. Oct. 19 – starts at the north entrance of the Illini Union.
Gary Kling, a professor of horticulture and a member of the Campus Tree Advisory Committee, will highlight some of the valuable and historic trees in the heart of campus.
- 2015 iCAP Official Release and Forum: 1-4 p.m. Oct. 21 (Sustainability Day), Illini Union Room A.
The 2015 Illinois Climate Action Plan will officially be released at 1 p.m. Learn more about the details of the plan and about the progress of campus sustainability at Illinois. Also learn how to get involved to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how to transform Illinois into a global role model for campus sustainability. Register online.
- Sustainability Day Keynote Event: 5-7 p.m. Oct. 21, National Soybean Research Center, Room 149.
Award-winning filmmaker Shalini Kantayya will share her new feature documentary, “Catching the Sun: The Race for the Clean Energy Future.” After the screening, Kantayya will speak about making the film and the conclusions it draws, and will take questions from the audience. This event is presented by the Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment; and student organizations the Solar Decathlon, Beyond Coal and the U.S. Green Building Council. - Waste Transfer Station Tour: 11 a.m.-noon, Oct. 22
The Waste Transfer and Material Recovery Facility is located at 10 E. St. Mary’s Road, Champaign. Tracy Osby, coordinator of waste management and recycling, will walk people through the facility and describe the process for sorting recyclables. Limited space available: People can sign up online.
