Anthony Tangora, assistant director of club programs for the UI Alumni Association, has been awarded the 2004 Jerry F. Tardy New Professional Award by the Council of Alumni Association Executives. The award is given in memory of Jerry F. Tardy, who was president and CEO of the Indiana University Alumni Association as well as an advocate of the alumni relations profession and a mentor for many of his colleagues. With a bequest from the council, recipients of the Tardy award visit alumni associations of their choosing to learn how their colleagues organize and encourage alumni participation.

John Chato, professor emeritus of mechanical and industrial engineering, was elevated to the grade of fellow by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers at its 2004 winter meeting held at the UI Jan. 24-28. Fellow membership is earned through achievement as a researcher, designer and educator or engineering executive. Approximately 500 of the Society’s 55,000 members are fellows.

Jim Edgar, former Illinois governor and distinguished fellow in the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, has been appointed president of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum Foundation by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. When Edgar was governor, he began the campaign to build the library and museum and committed the first public funds to its development. Edgar also is a collector of Lincoln documents and has an extensive collection of presidential biographies.

Scott Althaus, professor of political science and of speech communication, has been awarded a 2004 Goldsmith Book Prize for his recent book “Collective Preferences in Democratic Politics: Opinion Surveys and the Will of the People” (Cambridge University Press). The award is presented by the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University to the academic book(s) that best contribute to the improvement of the quality of government or politics through an examination of the press or the intersection of the press and politics in the formation of public policy.

Jane Block, head architecture and art librarian, has been appointed to an international jury that will determine the winner of the prize for Young Humanistic Scientists in Belgium. The goal of this prize, the only distinction awarded by the King of Belgium, is to further “the development of higher education and scientific research in Belgium.”
Barbara J. Ford, professor and director of the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the UI, has been elected to the Standing Committee of the University Libraries and Other General Research Libraries Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions for 2004-2007. IFLA headquarters are located in The Hague.
Jo Kibbee, professor of library administration and head reference librarian, has been named to the Editorial Board of Reference Services Review, a quarterly journal dedicated to the enrichment of reference knowledge and the advancement of reference services.
Jennifer Hain Teper, conservator and professor of library administration, has been named one of the Library Journal’s Movers and Shakers for 2004. This award identifies emerging leaders in the library world and each year the journal profiles 50 up-and-coming professionals in the United States and Canada who are innovative, creative and making a difference in librarianship.
