Associate Provost Elabbas Benmamoun is the new vice provost for faculty affairs and academic policies. His appointment is effective Aug. 16, pending approval by the U. of I. Board of Trustees.
He will replace Barbara J. Wilson, who is the Harry E. Preble dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Benmamoun joined the Office of the Provost in December 2013 as the associate provost for faculty development. He previously served as the head of the department of linguistics and then as the director of the School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He also is a Romano Professorial Scholar in the department of linguistics. Benmamoun earned his B.A. from the Mohammed University of Morocco, his M.A. from the University College of London and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.
"He has made significant contributions to the campus and has a wealth of knowledge of academic affairs, policies and practices," said Ilesanmi Adesida, the vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost in an email to the campus. "He is ideally suited for the position of vice provost for faculty affairs and academic policies."
