CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Champaign County residents interested in getting an inside look at how local law enforcement works are invited to participate in the Champaign County Citizen Police Academy.
The academy, which meets Thursday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 for 12 weeks beginning Sept. 2, will cover crime prevention; community-based policing; drug, alcohol abuse and enforcement; domestic violence; drunken driving enforcement; citizen-police contacts; use of force; and firearms safety. The meetings are held at the Police Training Institute, 1004 S. Fourth St., Champaign.
Now in its 10th year, the academy strives to help local residents better understand police work. In addition, the police agencies involved in the academy seek feedback from participants about law-enforcement issues.
For more information or to enroll in the program, call Lois Welling at the institute, 244-9589, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.
