    Carol Symes, a professor of history and of medieval studies, is the editor of “The Medieval Globe,” a journal based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. A special open access issue of the journal is devoted to evidence that the Black Death was killing people in Asia more than a century before it was seen in Europe.
