English professor Janice Harrington has written a children’s biography of pioneering Black botanist Charles S. Parker, “Rooting for Plants: The Unstoppable Charles S. Parker, Black Botanist and Collector.” Parker traveled widely to collect plant specimens. He collected a fungi that is a pathogen for fir trees – Lophodermium lacerum, or fir needle cast – during a 1930 trip to Canada. The fungi, on a twig of balsam fir, is preserved at the Illinois Natural History Survey herbarium at the U. of I.
