  • Illinois researchers’ project seeks to learn from Indigenous practices in music, engineering

An interdisciplinary research project of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign explored Indigenous practices of making music and of engineering design in Bolivia and Sierra Leone. Engineering graduate student Jess Mingee and music professor Bernhard Scully improvised on their French horns with the Sierra Leone National Dance Troupe in Freetown, Sierra Leone, during a 2022 visit. They and engineer and Carle Illinois College of Medicine professor Ann-Perry Witmer recently published a book of essays reflecting on the project.
