Writers to read from and talk about their work

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Three award-winning fiction writers – Susan Power, Roy Kesey and Katharine Min – will visit the University of Illinois on Oct. 15, Nov. 5 and Nov. 7, respectively, to read from and talk about their work.

All of their presentations are free and open to the public as part of the Fall 2007 Carr Reading Series, which is presented by the English department’s Creative Writing Program. All readings will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Authors Corner of the Illini Union Bookstore, 809 S. Wright St., Champaign.

The Authors Corner also will be the site of a faculty reading on Nov 14. LeAnne Howe will read from her new book, the novel “Miko Kings: An Indian Baseball Story.” The reading will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Howe, a professor of English and of American Indian Studies at the U. of I., is interim director of AIS. She also is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, a playwright, filmmaker, scholar and recipient of many literary awards, fellowships and grants, most of which explore aspects of life in American Indian communities.

Next spring, four authors – two with extremely close ties to the U. of I. – will participate in the Spring 2008 Carr Reading Series: Mark Costello on Feb. 13; Mariko Nagai on March 3; Patrick Rosal on April 3; and David Foster Wallace on April 11.

Costello taught creative writing in the U. of I. English department from 1972 to 2002; Foster, the son of professors at Illinois and Parkland, was raised in the local area.

Emily Raboteau and Natasha Tretheway read from their work earlier this semester.
