Works of contemporary artists on view at I space through May 27

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Two new exhibitions by contemporary artists will be on view April 28 through May 27 at I space, UIUC’s Chicago gallery.

“Increment of One” features Canadian-born artist Micah Lexier’s most recent explorations of themes such as time, volume and life span. Much of Lexier’s body of work examines the quantification of human experience through time, using media as diverse as drywall, lines crossing a sheet of paper, coins and text. By incorporating units of measure, such as minutes, years and age, Lexier’s work questions notions of how we measure worth quantitatively and qualitatively.

“Pink Works: Selected Paintings 1994-2000” highlights the work of Chicago artist Lorraine Peltz, who often has incorporated the color pink into her paintings during the past seven years. Although pink frequently is associated with things that are pretty, feminine and domestic, in this collection of paintings, it is also empowering, life-affirming and sensual. The show is the fourth in a series of I space exhibitions that focus attention on a specific aspect of the work of established Chicago artists.

An opening reception for the artists is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. April 28 at the gallery, 230 W. Superior St., Chicago.

I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
