Works by MFA graduates on view at I space beginning Friday

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Recent work by six graduates of the master of fine arts program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is on view Friday (July 18) through Aug. 13 at I space, the university’s Chicago gallery.

Artists represented in “Tracked and Tracking: Recent MFA Graduates at UIUC” are Anna Callahan, Kyomi Chiba, Kariann Fuqua, Alberto Gonzalez, Martin Novak and Catherine Wiesener.

“Examined in the right conditions, marks acquire the significance of tracks,” said art and design professor Kevin Hamilton, who co-organized the exhibition with art and design professor Nan Goggin. “Created or interpreted as efforts at expression or communication, marks become tracks when viewed primarily as evidence, data ready for consumption. Such is the case with the work of these recent graduates of the MFA program. Unwilling to take for granted the role of artist as mark-maker, each artist demonstrates a concern for how the mark gets made, who makes it, and why.”

An opening reception is scheduled to take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday (July 18) at the gallery, 230 W. Superior St., Chicago.

I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
