Work of dance student to be performed at national gala

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois dance student Darrin Wright is among a select group of choreographers whose dances will be performed at the National College Dance Festival Gala May 19-21 at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Wright, a junior in the UI’s College of Fine and Applied Arts who lives in California, earned his place on the national festival program at a regional competition held at the American College Dance Festival’s Great Lakes Festival in Detroit in March. Sixty-one dances were adjudicated at the festival, one of nine held nationwide. Wright’s solo piece, “Modus Operandi,” which he performed, was among 11 chosen for inclusion in the regional festival’s gala concert. It was one of five dances from that program selected to advance to the national festival.

Wright also was nominated to receive Dance magazine’s Outstanding Performer/Choreographer Award. One student choreographer and one student performer from each region are eligible to be nominated for the award, which will be announced at the national festival in May. Wright was nominated in both categories.

“Modus Operandi” will be among the dances featured on the Studiodance II concert program April 14-15 at the UI’s Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. For ticket information, contact the KCPA ticket office, (217) 333-6280.
