Wildlife Society honors author of ‘Waterfowl of Illinois: Status and Management’

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Stephen P. Havera, director of the Forbes Biological Station of the Illinois Natural History Survey, was honored Sept. 13 by the Wildlife Society as the recipient of its 2000 Wildlife Publications Award for his comprehensive book on Illinois waterfowl.

The book, “Waterfowl of Illinois: Status and Management,” was published last year by the Illinois Natural History Survey. The award was presented during the Wildlife Society’s seventh annual conference in Nashville, Tenn.

The 672-page book and its companion field guide are based on more than a century of research by survey scientists. They capture the rich waterfowl tradition of the region and document the history, habitats, populations, harvest, nesting biology, management, banding, food habits, programs and other information relevant to waterfowl and wetlands.

Havera, a senior professional scientist in the University of Illinois department of natural resources and environmental sciences, has studied a variety of wildlife species in agricultural, forest and wetland landscapes during his 30-year career with the Survey. A native of Peoria, Havera also is on the faculty of Bradley University.

Havera is the fourth member of the Survey’s Center for Wildlife Ecology to win the award. Previous winners were Frank C. Bellrose in 1976 for “Ducks, Geese and Swans of North America,” Bellrose and Daniel J. Holm for their book “Ecology and Management of the Wood Duck” in 1994 and Harold C. Hanson for “The Giant Canada Goose” in 1996.

Ordering information for Havera’s book and the companion field guide is available by calling (309) 543-3950 or by visiting www.theramp.net/inhswaterfowl on the Web.
