War correspondent, alumnus Terrell Jermaine Starr to speak on campus

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — War correspondent and Illinois alumnus Terrell Jermaine Starr will visit the Urbana campus for a Q&A session about his experiences as a journalist reporting from Ukraine during the Russian invasion.

The in-person event, which is free and open to the public, will be held Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. CDT in the auditorium of the Campus Instructional Facility, 1405 W. Springfield Ave., Urbana.

The event also will be broadcast online via Zoom but advance registration is required at https://go.illinois.edu/QAWithTerrellJermaineStarr.

Starr, an independent journalist based in Kyiv, has been covering the Russian assault on Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. His first-person reporting has been featured on cable news outlets, and he maintains an active Twitter presence (@terrelljstarr) while covering the war.

Starr is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center and has previously worked at The Root and Foxtrot Alpha, a blog that focuses on the military, technology and policy.

Starr also is the founder and host of the Black Diplomats podcast, where he covers geopolitical issues.

In 2009, he earned master’s degrees in Russian, East European, and Eurasian studies and in journalism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Starr also lived in Ukraine as a Fulbright fellow and a freelance journalist, and in the Republic of Georgia as a Peace Corps volunteer.

The event is part of a series of events titled “Russia’s War on Ukraine: An IGI Series on Global Responsibilities,” which features multidisciplinary topics on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war. The series is hosted and sponsored by the Illinois Global Institute and its global studies centers and thematic programs.
