  • Four doctoral students honored

    Four doctoral students were honored for the quality of their work using survey research methodology. The two winners of the 2016 Robert Ferber and Seymour Sudman Dissertation Awards received $2,000 awards and plaques commemorating their achievement. Two other students each received an honorable mention certificate and $200. Ferber and Sudman, in whose memory the awards were established, were eminent scholars at Illinois in the field of survey research.

  • Peter Ashbrook receives Honorary Life Award

    The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association gave Peter Ashbrook the Honorary Life Award – its highest individual honor – at its annual meeting in Austin, Texas, last month.

    Ashbrook, who retired last year, served the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 21 years, most recently as the director of the Division of Research Safety. Ashbrook organized the first College and University Hazardous Waste Conference in 1982, wrote regular columns on laboratory waste minimization and laboratory safety in academia for 14 years for the Journal of Chemical Health and Safety, served in several leadership positions for CSHEMA, and made numerous presentations on laboratory safety issues at professional conferences.

    Students receive American Society of Landscape Architecture award

    The American Society of Landscape Architects named a group of Illinois graduate students among its award recipients for 2016. Selected from 271 entries representing 71 schools, the ASLA student awards honor the top work of landscape architecture students in the U.S. and around the world.

    College of Engineering faculty members honored

    Mani Golparvar-Fard, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, won the 2016 Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Golparvar-Fard was cited for his “cutting-edge research focused on creating new knowledge in computer vision sensing and analytics to formalize simple yet effective project monitoring and control techniques for construction teams, as well as for his active engagement teaching philosophy.”

  • Chancellor's Scholars named to Campus Honors Program

    Chosen for their academic excellence and leadership potential, 131 freshmen and sophomores at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been designated Chancellor’s Scholars in the Campus Honors Program this fall. The Campus Honors Program admits up to 125 freshmen each year and up to 20 additional students join the program at the beginning of their sophomore year.

  • Engineering faculty members appear in the 2016 List of Most Cited Researchers in Materials Science and Engineering

    The U. of I. is represented in the 2016 List of Most Cited Researchers in Materials Science and Engineering by Elsevier Scopus Data. Faculty researchers from several different disciplines were represented: Prashant K. Jain, Jeffrey S. Moore, Catherine Jones Murphy and Ralph G. Nuzzo (chemistry); Tami C. Bond, Wen-Tso Liu and Billie F. Spencer Jr. (civil and environmental engineering); Minh Do, Pramod Viswanath and Daniel Liberzon (electrical and computer engineering); and John A. Rogers (materials science and engineering).

  • Dana Gillon honored with the 2016 APPA Pacesetter Award

    Dana Gillon, coordinator of special programs for the U. of. I., was honored with the 2016 APPA Pacesetter Award. APPA, previously known as the Association of Physical Plant Administrators, promotes leadership in educational facilities for professionals seeking to build their careers, transform their institutions and elevate the value and recognition of facilities in education. Pacesetter award recipients were recognized July 12 during the 2016 APPA Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

  • College of Engineering faculty members honored

    Brendan Harley, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has been selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s 22nd annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. Each year the academy invites engineers ages 30 to 45 who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines to attend the event.

    Jennifer T. Bernhard, the associate dean for research in the College of Engineering, has been elected to the Engineering Research Council Executive Board of Directors for 2016-19. As part of the American Society of Engineering Education, the Engineering Research Council is composed of representatives from engineering colleges, industry and government as a forum for discussion of problems and exchange of information pertaining to the research activities of ASEE members.

  • Book published by University of Illinois Press wins award

    The book “Sensing Chicago: Noisemakers, Strikebreakers, and Muckrakers” by Adam Mack, published by the University of Illinois Press, won an award for superior achievement from the Illinois State Historical Society.

     

  • College of Engineering faculty members honored

    College of Engineering faculty members Paul V. Braun, Huimin Zhao, Jianming Jin, Rizwan Uddin and Jessica Krogstad were all recently honored, and a former nuclear reactor on campus became an America Nuclear Society Nuclear Historic Landmark.

  • Plewa named 2016-18 Phi Kappa Phi Scholar

    Michael J. Plewa, a professor emeritus of genetics and University Scholar at Illinois, has been selected by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi - the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society - as the 2016-18 Phi Kappa Phi Scholar. Plewa received the award for his achievements in research, teaching, service and leadership.

  • Three U. of I. students receive Critical Language Scholarships

    Three University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students have been awarded U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarships to study a foreign language this summer. During the past 10 years, the program has sent over 5,000 American undergraduate and graduate students overseas to learn critical languages.

  • Ten U. of I. students and recent alumni offered Fulbright grants

    Ten University of Illinois students have been offered student Fulbright grants to pursue international educational, research and teaching experiences this coming year. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to build international relations to solve global challenges. 

  • Four receive awards for excellence in faculty leadership

    Four faculty members were honored with the Campus Awards for Excellence in Faculty Leadership at the Celebration of Academic Service and Leadership event held at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center on May 11.

    Given by the Office of the Provost, the three annual awards recognize faculty members who distinguish themselves with their vision of the future and their effort to enable and promote others in shaping that future. Each award consists of an honorarium of $2,000 for the personal use of the recipient and a personalized commemorative plaque. The event also recognized members of provost committees.

    Champaign, Ill. – Graduate students Bradford Coyle, Miriam Keep and Phoebe Shelor and undergraduate Daniel Levin have received prestigious Boren Awards for study abroad during 2016-17.

    Outstanding individual and group outreach efforts were recognized April 26 with the 2016 Campus Awards for Excellence in Public Engagement. The awards were presented by Interim Chancellor Barbara J. Wilson and Pradeep K. Khanna, the associate chancellor for corporate and international relations, at the I Hotel and Conference Center.

  • 36 Illinois students awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

    Thirty-six University of Illinois students have won National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, including 31 graduate students and five undergraduates. An additional 52 students were accorded honorable mention.

    The University of Illinois is among the top-five public universities in the nation for 2015-16 Fulbright U.S. Students, according to information recently released from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

    Six researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

    Between Sept. 1, 2014, and Aug. 31, 2015, 40 faculty members and 59 academic professionals retired from the U. of I., according to the Office of Academic Human Resources.

    Recently retired and long-serving staff employees will be honored at the 2015 Staff Service Recognition Banquet Nov. 5 at the I Hotel and Conference Center. The program will honor 110 employees who retired between Sept. 1, 2014, and Aug. 31, 2015. In addition employess will be honored for service completed during that time.
