  • Astronomy department hosts first open house April 23

    The U. of I. astronomy department will host its first open house April 23, telling guests to stop by the campus Observatory, 901 S. Mathews Ave., anytime between 1- 5 p.m. and 8-10 p.m.

  • Social Dimensions of Environmental Policy to talk about land reforms in Africa

    The Social Dimensions of Environmental Policy will hold the event titled “Land Reforms in West and Central Africa: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Empowerment of Local Communities."

  • Deadline approaching for predoctoral fellowships in the humanities

    Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, seeks to select two predoctoral fellows in biohumanities for the 2016–17 academic year.

  • Enforcement policy for smoke-free campus announced

    In May 2015, the campus announced that modifications would be made to its Smoke-Free Campus Policy in accordance with the State of Illinois Smoke-Free Campus Act (110 ILCS64/1-99).

  • Multitalented entertainer Tia Mowry to speak at Illini Union

    Tia Mowry, star of “Sister, Sister” and “The Game,” has been involved in many different facets of the entertainment industry for more than 20 years. She will speak at the Illini Union at 7 p.m. March 31 in the I-Rooms.

  • All Employee Expo scheduled for Oct. 20

  • Edible book festival is April 4 at University YMCA

    The 11th annual Edible Book Festival, sponsored by the University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will be April 4. The campus and local communities are invited to experience this unique intersection of the book arts and cuisine.

  • Arbor Day Celebration is April 29

    Facilities and Services and the Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment will host an Arbor Day celebration from noon to 1 p.m. April 29, on the Quad near Noyes Laboratory.

  • Faculty members to discuss AAUP censure, academic freedom and criminal background check policy

    Three faculty panelists will lead a discussion of the issues arising from the June censure of the U. of I. by the American Association of University Professors and the proposal by the U. of I. Board of Trustees this fall to require criminal background checks for all new faculty members. The event, sponsored by the Urbana campus AAUP Chapter, will be at 4 p.m. Oct. 20 in Room 314A Illini Union.

  • New version of the Campus Profile now available

    The Division of Management Information has announced the latest version of the Campus Profile is now available online.

  • Registration open for U. of I. Spanish classes for children

    Registration is now open for Spanish classes for the 2016-17 academic year at the University Language Academy for Children for pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade, as well as middle school. The latter program is now in its second year for the academy, which opened in 2010. For pre-K through fifth grade, classes meet four times a week, Monday-Thursday from 3:15-4:10 p.m. or 4:20-5:15 p.m. Classes are at the University Primary School (Children’s Research Center), 51 E. Gerty Drive, Champaign. For middle school, classes are offered three times a week, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 3:45-5 p.m. Classes are at the Foreign Languages Building, 707 S. Mathew Ave., Urbana. The academy’s academic year begins Sept. 6 and ends May 20.

  • Globalization at Illinois: Join the conversation at noon Nov. 10

    Illinois International Programs invites faculty members to “Globalization at Illinois: A Faculty Dialogue,” a town-hall style conversation about globalization at Illinois at noon Nov. 10 in Room 104 of the Illini Union.

    January in Illinois was colder and drier than normal without much snow, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey at Illinois.

     

  • Dutch ambassador to keynote EU Day on Monday

    Netherlands’ ambassador to the U.S. will deliver the keynote address for the 14th annual European Union Day at the U. of I. on Feb. 29, speaking on the state of the EU.

  • Entrepreneurship Forum is April 28

    The Provost's Roundtable on Entrepreneurship will host its annual Entrepreneurship Forum from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28 at the Illini Union.

  • Pre-tenure and midcareer faculty workshops announced

    Two upcoming workshops organized by the Provost’s Office – one for pre-tenure faculty members and one for midcareer faculty members – will be May 5 at the I Hotel and Conference Center.

  • Inaugural festival celebrates intersections of music and sustainability

    Global Arts Performance Initiatives will present the inaugural Sonified Sustainability Festival from April 14-May 1.

  • $1.9 million available for campus utility conservation projects

    More than $1.9 million will be available for campus projects through the Revolving Loan Fund this semester. Departments and units interested in submitting utility conservation work for consideration are encouraged to complete the application online.

  • Best-selling author Wes Moore visits Illini Union to deliver program keynote lecture

    Author, educator and entrepreneur Wes Moore will present the One Book One Campus keynote lecture at the Illini Union at 7 p.m. Dec. 8. An informal reception and book signing will immediately follow the presentation.

  • Free, live concert of Italian music on March 17 at the Illini Union

    The department of French and Italian is hosting a free, live performance of Italian music at 5 p.m. March 17 in Illini Room B in the Illini Union.

     

  • Student Senate hosts fourth meeting, invites input on possible university mascot

    The Illinois Student Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Exploration of a University Mascot will host its fourth meeting at 5 p.m. April 1 in Illini Union Room 104.

  • Award-winning author Powell to present in Sesquicentennial Reading Series

    Patricia Hruby Powell, an award-winning young-adult author and Illinois alumna, will provide the third reading and discussion for the Illini Union Bookstore reading series marking the University of Illinois’ 150th year.

     

  • May 5 event reflects on lecture series and undergraduate education

    The final event in a lecture series focusing on undergraduate education will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. May 5 in the ACES Library Heritage Room. The event will include a conversation to reflect on the year’s four lectures and the issues they raise about undergraduate education on the Urbana campus. The series has been planned and hosted by the Lecture and Discussion Committee of the Campus Conversation on Undergraduate Education. Light refreshments will be served.

  • AAUP hosts open meeting with former Gov. Jim Edgar on May 10

    The U. of I. chapter of the American Association of University Professors will host an open meeting with former Gov. Jim Edgar from 3 to 4:30 p.m. May 10 in the General Lounge of the Illini Union Room 210. 

  • U. of I.’s ROTC units host Veterans Day ceremony at Armory

    The U. of I. ROTC units will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 5 p.m. Nov. 11 at the indoor track of the Armory Building. The event is designed to commemorate veterans of all branches of the United States military. The event is organized by the Naval, Army and Air Force ROTC units of the U. of I.

  • Cold, dry December ends a warm year in Illinois

    The statewide average temperature for December was 28.6, 1.3 degrees below normal, according to Jim Angel, Illinois state climatologist at the Illinois State Water Survey, part of the Prairie Research Institute at Illinois. 

     

  • Free hearing screenings offered by the U. of I. Audiology Clinic

    The U. of I. Audiology Clinic is offering free hearing screenings through April 22. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 217-333-2230; appointments are not available by email.

  • Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’ to open Ebertfest

    Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” will open the 18th Annual Roger Ebert’s Film Festival.

  • Earth Week 2016 offers range of events on U. of I. campus

    Activities for Earth Week 2016 on the U. of I. campus are being organized by Students for Environmental Concerns. The U. of I. will host several other events leading up to and following the official dates, which are April 18-22.

  • The All Employee Expo to be held Oct. 18

    The annual All Employee Expo will take place Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., Urbana, in rooms A, B and C.

  • Students encouraged to enter the Sesquicentennial Design Competition

    The department of landscape architecture at Illinois announces the Sesquicentennial Design Competition, an initiative for students.

     

  • Illini Emergency Medical Services honored at national event

    Illini Emergency Medical Services, a program of the Illinois Fire Service Institute at Illinois, will be honored by the Congressional Fire Services Institute and Masimo, a medical device manufacturer, for excellence in emergency medical services. IEMS will receive the 2018 Excellence in Fire Service-based Emergency Medical Services Award at the 30th annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner on April 19 in Washington, D.C.

  • Technology Services implements one-password system and easier resets

    Technology Services recently implemented a new password system that will save faculty and staff members and students time by not having to maintain multiple passwords. It also will be easier to reset a password if the user forgets it.

  • Record-setting December occurred in Illinois

    December was the warmest and second-wettest for that month on record in Illinois, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel, of the Illinois State Water Survey. 

  • Summer Quad Cinema Series open to all

    The Illini Union Board’s Summer Quad Cinema Series features four films open to the Champaign-Urbana community, free of charge. 

    Film titles, run dates and ratings are Zootopia, PG, May 26; Eye in the Sky, R, June 9; The Boss, R, July 7; and The Angry Birds, PG, Aug. 4. Start time for all films is 9 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the movies will be shown inside the Illini Union.

  • Saving India’s River: Ganges Symposium is Oct. 9

    The Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies will host a daylong symposium dedicated to exploring the Ganges River – its heritage, threats to its sustenance and planning initiatives to conserve it.

  • Abbott Power Plant hosts open house Nov. 6

    Energizing the U. of I. since 1941, Abbott Power Plant provides safe, reliable, environmentally compliant and cost-effective energy to support the mission of the university.

  • Fourth Science and Archaeology Symposium scheduled for Feb. 19

    The Illinois State Archaeological Survey and the Ancient Technologies and Archaeological Materials program will host the Fourth Science and Archaeology Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Room 314A of the Illini Union.

  • Illinois Distinguished Lecture Series in Operations Research announces speaker

    Edward H. Kaplan, the William N. and Marie A. Beach Professor of Operations Research, Public Health and Engineering at Yale University’s School of Management, will present “Adventures in Policy Modeling!” from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in the National Center for Supercomputing Applications auditorium at 1205 W. Clark St., Urbana. A reception will follow in the NCSA atrium.

     

  • University Primary School to hold open house

    University Primary School, the laboratory school of the College of Education, will host an open house for the community on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Children’s Research Center, 51 Gerty Drive, Champaign.

  • Facebook research manager to speak at School of Information Sciences Research Showcase

    A Facebook user experience researcher will be the keynote speaker Nov. 8 at the School of Information Sciences Research Showcase.

    Funda Kivran-Swaine is a research manager at Facebook who has worked in user experience design and whose research focuses on computer-mediated communication. She will give the keynote address at 1 p.m. Nov. 8 in Illini Union Rooms A and B.

  • Japan House is auctioning handmade quilts online

    Japan House is auctioning more than two dozen handmade quilts. The online auction is live now and continues through Nov. 8. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Kimiko Gunji Legacy Fund to support visiting artists and teachers who will share Japanese culture.
