    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Twenty University of Illinois students from the Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield campuses have won Avery Brundage Scholarships for excellence in academics and athletics. Each student will receive $2,500 for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Recipients were honored Feb. 4.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - A researcher at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology has won first place in the Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge sponsored by Science magazine and the National Science Foundation.

    Yue Zhuo, a postdoctorate fellow in the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory and at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at Illinois, has been awarded a Postdoctoral Scholar Award for a paper that was submitted to the annual Microscopy and Microanalysis Conference.

    Ruth Nicole Brown, a professor of gender and women’s studies at Illinois, received a Whiting Public Engagement Fellowship for $50,000 to expand Black Girls Genius Week, a series of humanities-based workshops for African-American middle school- and high school-aged girls, from central Illinois to Chicago, San Diego and Columbia, South Carolina.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - One hundred and forty freshmen and sophomores at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been designated Chancellor's Scholars in the Campus Honors Program this fall.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Microbiologist Carl R. Woese formally accepted the $500,000 Crafoord Prize in Biosciences from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Sweden. The king of Sweden presented the prize to Woese on Sept. 24.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Microbiologist Carl R. Woese today won the $500,000 Crafoord Prize in Biosciences given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The annual prize marks accomplishments in scientific fields not covered by the Nobel Prizes in science, which the academy also selects. The king of Sweden will present the prize to Woese Sept. 24 in Stockholm.

The appointment grants one semester of release time for creative work on self-initiated programs of scholarly research or professional activity. The center's annual competition culminated with 13 professors and associate professors receiving an associate appointment and 10 assistant professors receiving a fellow appointment. Three associates and six fellows also received Beckman appointments. Named for UI alumnus and benefactor Arnold O. Beckman, the additional appointments recognized outstanding younger candidates who have made distinctive scholarly contributions.
