A memorial for the men and women who gave their lives for their country in World War I, Memorial Stadium has been a part of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for the past 100 years. This year, we are thankful to be able to celebrate the 2022 University-wide Commencement Ceremony at Memorial Stadium to congratulate graduates.
Over the years, the university has put in numerous efforts to renovate the stadium so it can continue to create memories for the Illinois community. Take a glimpse at Memorial Stadium through the years:
1924
After the dedication ceremony in 1924, a large crowd gathered to watch Illinois vs. Michigan. At the time, Michigan hadn’t been defeated in two years, but Illinois overcame to win 39-14 in a monumental game.
1967
In 1967, Memorial Stadium added the finishing touches to the press boxes that were added to the west balcony of the stadium.
1972-1974
Following the next couple of years, various renovation projects were made which included the aluminum seating and the installation of the first artificial turf.
1993
More recent renovations of the stadium took place in the early 1990s. The concrete bleachers in both upper decks, the electrical and drainage systems and the restrooms were updated.
2002
In the winter of 2002, expansion efforts were made as well as the installation of the video-replay scoreboard. The current video display scoreboard is pictured from Commencement 2019.
2022
Memorial Stadium wouldn’t be what it is today if it weren’t for the students, alumni, university community members, fans and visitors who continue to celebrate and cherish this stadium.
No matter where you are, you can tune in to watch the University-wide Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will be livestreamed at go.illinois.edu/live.
