CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Collaborative paintings, photographs, drawings and installation are part of the rich mix of work on view in three exhibitions March 3 through April 1 at I space, the Chicago gallery of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:

• “Galina Shevchenko: Drawings and Installation” features drawings and animated videos of drawings, along with an installation/video projection in the gallery’s atrium. Born in Moscow, Shevchenko is now based in Chicago, where she frequently exhibits her paintings, prints and videos and sometimes performs as a VJ.

• “Team SHaG” is a collaborative exhibition of work by New York artists David Humphrey, Elliott Green and Amy Sillman. Taking their cue from Surrealist artists Andre Breton and Paul Eluard, the artists create what they call “team paintings.” One artist begins the work, then passes it along to the other two to complete. The exhibition features a series of six oil-on-canvas paintings and 10 mixed media works on paper, in which the artists traded roles of beginning, middle and end collaborator.

• “Lisa Klapstock: Photography” showcases 24 images from the Toronto-based artist’s “Threshold” series. The photographs depict glimpses of backyard scenes or privates spaces framed by boundaries such as fences and walls. Klapstock says the images, with opposing depths of field, translate as color fields interrupted by fragments of sharply focused views, revealing scenes existing only in photographic form.

An opening reception is scheduled to take place from 5-7 p.m. on March 3 at the gallery, 230 W. Superior St., Chicago.

I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Atom-scale stencil patterns help nanoparticles take new shapes and learn new tricks

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Inspired by an artist’s stencils, researchers have developed atomic-level precision patterning on nanoparticle surfaces, allowing them to “paint” gold nanoparticles with polymers to give them an array of new shapes and functions. The “patchy nanoparticles” developed by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign researchers and collaborators at the University of Michigan and Penn State […]
