University initiates fundraising program for student relief

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is introducing a supplemental relief fund to support university students dealing with financial challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Called the Illinois CARES: COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund, the effort is part of the initiative announced by the University of Illinois System last week, the Students FIRST: COVID-19 Emergency Fund.

All students can request emergency funding beginning immediately. The Illinois CARES: COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund will help defray tuition, housing and other costs for undergraduate and graduate students experiencing unexpected shortfalls due to COVID-19 – both for current needs and for the upcoming academic year.

“Over the course of more than 150 years, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has grown to become synonymous with a world-class education,” said Chancellor Robert Jones. “We are at a juncture where, through no fault of their own, some of these incredible students may find additional financial hurdles in their pursuit of an Illinois education.”

The Illinois Cares: COVID-19 Support Program is being funded by the federal CARES Act, the university and through contributions from donors and friends.

“By participating in the Illinois CARES: COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund, our amazing alumni and friends can provide assistance to students who need it the most,” said Barry Benson, the vice chancellor for advancement.
