UI freshman released from hospital after treatment for Type B meningococcal infection

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A male freshman at the University of Illinois is being discharged in good condition from Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, today (March 14) after having been diagnosed with a Type B meningococcal infection.

He was admitted to Carle on Friday (March 10).

His infection was caused by the strain of bacteria that causes meningitis but he did not have meningitis, according to Dr. David Lawrance, medical director of the UI’s McKinley Health Center.

Students who had very close contact with the sick student have received preventive treatment. Other students in his fraternity and his residence hall have been contacted by university officials.
