U. of I. students’ works selected for inclusion in international art fair

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Five students from the University of Illinois are among the artists who have been selected to exhibit their work at Art Chicago 2010, an annual international fair of contemporary and modern art.

The fair, to be held April 30-May 3 at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, enables artists in a variety of media – including painting, photography, sculpture and video – to exhibit their work for curators, collectors and art enthusiasts. The 2009 fair drew nearly 50,000 visitors, according to the event’s website.

Tumelo Mosaka, curator at Krannert Art Museum on the U. of I.’s Urbana campus, selected work by four students in the master of fine arts degree program for exhibition at Art Chicago. The artists, their hometowns and their media:

Karri Fisher, Minneapolis, video

Motoko Furuhashi, Saitama, Japan; metalwork

Joseph Lingeman, Bloomington, Ind.; photography

Nicki Werner, St. Louis, sculpture

Work by a fifth student, Yun Jeong Hong, of Deajeon, South Korea, was selected for inclusion in New Insight, a celebrated exhibition within Art Chicago that showcases new and innovative work by MFA candidates. Hong was one of 22 students from schools across the country whose work will be included in the exhibition, curated by Suzanne Ghez, director of the Renaissance Society.

Art Chicago 2010 is part of Artropolis, a citywide celebration of arts, antiques and culture that also comprises the Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair and NEXT, an invitational exhibition of contemporary art from commercial and non-commercial arts organizations.

Opening previews will be held April 29. Information about exhibition hours and tickets is available at www.artchicago.com.

The Art Chicago exhibition will be on the 12th floor of the Merchandise Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza.
