U. of I.’s Japan House to commemorate Children’s Day on May 7

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Japan House will observe Children’s Day with crafts and a puppet show on May 7 (Saturday).

This holiday, when Japanese families celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of their children, is traditionally celebrated in Japan on May 5 (the fifth day of the fifth month). Families adorn their houses with streamers made to resemble carp – the fish believed to have swum upstream to become a dragon, according to legend.

The holiday was originally called Boys Day (girls had their own day on March 3, the third day of the third month). The tradition dates back to ancient times, and was designated a national holiday in 1948.

At Japan House, 2000 S. Lincoln Ave., in Urbana, children ages 3 through 10 are invited to learn some origami, have their names written in Japanese calligraphy, and watch a puppet show presented by Ginger Lozar. Activities begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 2:30. The puppet show begins at 1:30.

For more information, contact Japan House at 217-244-9934.
