CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois finance professor Murillo Campello has been named a rising star in finance by a panel of scholars from the nation’s top business schools.
Campello, the Alan J. and Joyce D. Baltz professor of finance in the nationally ranked U. of I. College of Business, was among four professors honored last month at the Rising Stars Conference 2010 in Troy, N.Y.
The Rising Star Award is given to young scholars who have made a significant contribution to the field of finance and whose impact is expected to grow as their careers unfold. A committee of business experts from Harvard, New York University, the Wharton Business School and other leading universities chooses the winners.
“We at Illinois have known of Murillo’s abilities since he was a student in our finance department,” said Larry DeBrock, the dean of the College of Business. “The college is extremely proud that Murillo has received this national recognition for his outstanding research. He continues to be a leader in the profession as well as a leader in the College of Business.”
The Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at NYU initiated the awards program in 2008, and host a conference every other year to honor four young stars in the fields of finance and financial intermediation.
Other award winners this year were Christopher Hennessey, of the London Business School; Philip Strahan, of Boston College; and Jeffrey Wurgler, of NYU.
In April, Campello also was awarded the position of research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that promotes better understanding of how the economy works.
Campello, , who joined the U. of I. finance faculty in 2002, studies corporate finance, financial mediation, financial markets and applied contract theory. His research has been published in top academic journals, including the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial Economics.
His recent scholarly work has focused on corporate liquidity management and credit markets imperfections.
“Murillo has already done path-breaking and internationally recognized work on how financing opportunities and financial constraints affect competitive firms,” said Charles Kahn, the chair of the U. of I. finance department. “This work has changed the way researchers understand corporate finance and it is making a vital contribution to our understanding of the recent financial crisis.”
Campello is an associate editor at the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Intermediation and the International Review of Finance.
He earned doctoral and master’s degrees in finance from the U. of I., and also earned a master’s degree in business administration from Pontifical Catholic University at Rio de Janeiro.
