U. of I. conference to address immigration and refugee issues in light of U.S. election

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Immigration, migration and refugees – topics that have loomed over both the U.S. presidential campaign and world politics – will be the subject of a two-day conference Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 26-27) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Experts from the U. of I. and other institutions will explore the historical, economic and legal dimensions of the subject, as well as the perspectives of various ethnic groups.

The conference also will include a screening at 5:30 p.m. Monday of the documentary “Dying to Get In!”, a close-up look at U.S./Mexico border crossings, which follows a group on its dangerous journey to enter the U.S. illegally. A panel discussion will follow the screening.

The conference, titled “Immigration, Migration, Refugees, and the 2016 Election,” is free and open to the public.

All sessions will be held in the Heritage Room at the ACES Library and Alumni Center, 1101 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana – except the film screening, which will take place in Room 1000 of Lincoln Hall, 702 S. Wright St., Urbana.

A detailed listing of sessions and speakers can be found online.
