CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Five recent graduates of the master of fine arts program in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have created a “Monster.”

At least that’s the title of an exhibition of their work on view July 7 through 29 at the I space, the university’s Chicago gallery.

The show, which includes sculpture, photography, installation and video art, curated by U. of I. photography professor Luke Batten, who also came up with the title. Explaining how he arrived at it, Batten wrote:

“Monster is not a scary monster. Monster is deadly serious with a great sense of humor. Monster takes on the history of art in the way only a prankster can. Monster combines the aesthetics of minimalism and the heroics of hard rock. Monster is at times delicate and yet destructive. Monster is perhaps most interestingly deeply personal in its journey through the rigors, joy and pain of a master of fine arts education.”

Exhibiting artists are Andy Ducett, Josh Ippel, Mariah Anne Johnson, Chad Stangl and Angela Waarala.

An opening reception is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. on July 14 at the gallery, located at 230 W. Superior St., Chicago.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
