Two-week intensive foreign language program to be offered in May

CHAMPAIGN,Ill. – The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics will offer its Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program this summer.

Classes, taught by advanced graduate students or faculty members, meet for three hours every weekday for two weeks, from May 14 through May 25. Courses focus on conversational skills, travel preparation and language survival skills. Homework is minimal, attendance is not mandatory, and there is no academic credit.

Elementary level classes, for those with no prior experience or formal training with the language, will be offered in Chinese (Mandarin), German, Modern Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Intermediate level classes, for those with the equivalent of one year of college-level instruction, will be offered in French, Italian and Spanish. An advanced level class, for those with the equivalent of two or more years of college-level instruction, will be offered in Spanish.

All classes are offered at 9 a.m. to noon except Modern Greek, which will meet from 5 to 8 p.m. Classes in elementary French and elementary Spanish are available at both morning and evening times.

The cost is $100 for U. of I. students, $125 for faculty and staff members and retirees, and $150 for the general public. Payment must be made at the time of registration. Participants are encouraged to register by April 14 (Saturday). After that date, courses with fewer than 10 people registered may be canceled (fees will be refunded). Participants who cancel after April 15 (Sunday) will be assessed a $25 fee. No refunds will be issued after May 15 (Saturday).
