Two graduate students win Doolen Scholarships to study aging

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Two University of Illinois graduate students have won 2000-2001 Paul D. Doolen graduate scholarships for the study of aging. They will receive $3,500 each to continue their studies in gerontology.

Jonathan Godbout of Champaign is pursuing a doctorate in animal sciences at the Urbana campus. His research focuses on the cellular mechanism by which diabetes complicates chemotherapy. Godbout earned a bachelor’s degree in cell and structural biology at the Urbana campus.

Janice Warren of Chicago is pursuing a doctorate in public health and gerontology at the Chicago campus. Her research examines older women’s health issues in connection with the prevention of cardiovascular disease. She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Moravian College and a master’s degree from Lehigh University. Both schools are in Bethlehem, Pa.

Doolen scholarships are awarded annually to graduate students in their second year of study or beyond whose principal scholarly interest lies in the field of aging. Established in 1986 by an endowment from the Retirement Research Foundation in Oak Park, Ill., the scholarships honor the late Paul D. Doolen, a longtime member of the foundation’s board of directors and a 1927 UI graduate.

Study finds that individual layers of synthetic materials can collaborate for greater impact

Millions of years of evolution have enabled some marine animals to grow complex protective shells composed of multiple layers that work together to dissipate physical stress. In a new study, engineers have found a way to mimic the behavior of this type of layered material, such as seashell nacre, by programming individual layers of synthetic material to work collaboratively under stress. The new material design is poised to enhance energy-absorbing systems such as wearable bandages and car bumpers with multistage responses that adapt to collision severity.
