Two graduate students receive grants to pursue gerontology research

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Two University of Illinois graduate students have been named the 2010-2011 Paul D. Doolen Graduate Scholars for the Study of Aging.

Each will receive $4,000 to continue their studies in gerontology. Both are pursing doctorates in kinesiology and community health.

Siobhan White, of Hanover Park, Ill., studies the psychosocial determinants and consequences of physical activity across the lifespan, in particular with older cancer survivors. She won the award in the behavioral-social sciences category. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Illinois.

Rudy Valentine, of Urbana, won the Doolen award in the biological-biomedical sciences category. His research focuses on the causes of fatigue in aging and the impact of body composition status and physical activity on health outcomes. Valentine earned his bachelor’s degree at Illinois and his master’s degree at James Madison University.

The Doolen Scholarship is awarded annually to graduate students in their second year of study, or beyond, whose principal scholarly interest is in the field of aging.

The scholarship was established in 1986 by an endowment from the Retirement Research Foundation in Oak Park, Ill., to honor the late Paul D. Doolen, a long-time member of the U. of I. Foundation’s board of directors and a 1927 graduate of Illinois.
