Two exhibitions at I Space showcase sculpture, painting and photography

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Two new exhibitions will be on view Sept. 10 through Oct. 9 at I space, the Chicago gallery of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

• “Bernard Williams: Sculpture and Painting” showcases new work by the Chicago-based artist and Illinois alumnus. Among them, “Queequeg’s Monument,” a sculptural construction, which, according to the artist, “holds history and material culture related to America, my own travels, research and scavenging.”

• “Building the Landscape: Photographs of America” features photographs by Arthur Marks, also an Illinois alumnus. The silver gelatin prints represent landscapes as glimpsed from interstate trains, commuter rail lines, subway cars, buses, passenger seats of cars and taxis, and on foot. According to the artist, his imagery often suggests themes of transportation and social interaction commingling with ecological and industrial concern.

An opening reception is scheduled to take place from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 10 at the gallery, 230 W. Superior St., Chicago.

I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
