Thirteen U. of I. undergraduates awarded Gilman Scholarships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Thirteen University of Illinois undergraduate students have been awarded scholarships from the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program. The scholarships are for students studying abroad in summer 2013, fall 2013 or the 2013-14 academic year.

The Gilman is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the regions of the world where they study. The award honors Benjamin A. Gilman, a former chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee who retired in 2002 after serving 30 years in the House of Representatives. Recipients of the scholarship have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other countries, cultures, economies and languages.

In this round of the national competition, 1,500 U.S. undergraduates were awarded scholarships from an applicant pool of 4,500. To be eligible for the award, students must demonstrate financial need by receiving a federal Pell Grant for their current studies. Gilman Scholars generally receive between $2,500 and $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad program costs. U. of I. recipients were awarded a total of more than $40,000 from the scholarship program to fund their overseas studies.

“North, South, East and West, our Gilman recipients will be representing the university on five different continents, and then just as important, will be bringing back what they have learned to our classrooms and their communities,” said David Schug, the director of the national and international scholarships program at Illinois.

Applications for spring 2014 Gilman scholarships are due Oct. 1, 2013.
