CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Ten members of the University of Illinois faculty and administration have been awarded 2007-2008 Fulbright Scholar grants.
Recipients are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields, according to the Fulbright Scholar Program.
The U. of I. recipients join about 800 other Americans who have received the grants to lecture or conduct research abroad. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
The U. of I. recipients and their fields:
• Elabbas Benmamoun, professor and chair of linguistics, has been studying and lecturing on the description and analysis of Kuwaiti dialects of Arabic at the University of Kuwait in Kuwait City since September. He will continue through January.
• Bertram C. Bruce, professor of library and information science, has been studying inquiry for action and understanding at the National College of Ireland in Dublin since September and will stay through May.
• Gary Andrew Cziko, professor of educational psychology, will study and lecture on autonomous technology-assisted language learning at the University of Playa Ancha in Valparaiso, Chile, from March to July.
• Gary J. Eden, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will hold a distinguished lectureship on microcavity plasma devices and optical physics on the femtosecond time scale. He will be at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa from February to June.
• Schuyler S. Korban, professor of plant genetics in the department of natural resources and environmental sciences and of molecular genetics and biotechnology in the Division of Nutritional Sciences, has held a distinguished lectureship on ethics in biotechnology at York University in Toronto since August. His appointment continues through December.
• Zorica Nedovic-Budic, professor of urban and regional planning, will lecture and study East-West exchanges on urban development and planning practice at the University of Belgrade in Serbia from February to June.
• Andreas Argyros Polycarpou, professor of mechanical science and engineering, will study deposition and nanomechanical property measurements of magnetic-mode oxide films for thermal management in magnetic storage hard disk drives at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia from March to July.
• Jacqueline Ross, professor of law, will study policing in immigrant communities and compare France and the United States. She will be at the Higher School of Education of Cachan in Paris from January to June.
• Mark Christian Thompson, professor of English, will lecture on “the aesthetics of blackness” at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, from February to June.
• Allison B. Walter, assistant director in the office of international engagement, communications and protocol, participated in a U.S.-Germany International Education Administrators Program seminar at the German-American Fulbright Commission in Berlin from October to November.
